HMAS Bataan was the only Tribal-class destroyer named for a battle rather than a people. Her planned Aboriginal name was changed to honour the American stand on the Bataan Peninsula, complementing the United States Navy's decision to name USS Canberra after the Australian cruiser lost at Savo Island. Bataan arrived too late for Second World War combat but became an important Australian contribution during the Korean War. Her name preserved alliance memory while the wartime hull remained operationally relevant in a new conflict.

Why HMAS Bataan broke the Tribal naming pattern
HMAS Bataan's unusual name records wartime Australian-American ties before the destroyer carried that legacy into Korean War service.
