Why Barfleur served in the Mediterranean

Mediterranean basing kept Barfleur near British support while positioning the ship for rapid movement toward the Indian Ocean and East Asia.

Question

Why was HMS Barfleur based in the Mediterranean instead of closer to the Far East?

Short answer

The Mediterranean combined affordable British support infrastructure with a forward position from which the ship could deploy rapidly through Suez toward the Far East.

Notes

The Mediterranean was a practical forward base for East Asian commitments. Britain could maintain substantial infrastructure there more cheaply and reliably than at the far end of the imperial network. The fleet remained comparatively close to home yards while standing near the Suez route into the Indian Ocean. This placed naval power roughly a quarter of the way around the world so it could move farther east when required.
