How the Barents Sea action nearly transformed Allied fleet allocation

The convoy's survival provoked a German command crisis whose outcome kept surface raiders in service and tied major Royal Navy forces to northern waters.

Notes

The Battle of the Barents Sea mattered far beyond the safe arrival of JW 51B. Hitler's anger contributed to Erich Raeder's resignation, Karl Donitz's succession, and a threat to scrap the Kriegsmarine's large surface ships. Had that happened in early 1943, Britain could have released battleships, cruisers, and carriers from the Home Fleet for the Mediterranean, Eastern Fleet, and preparations around D-Day. Donitz preserved the raiders, which set the conditions for Scharnhorst's final sortie against the Arctic convoys a year later.
