The convoy action was initially called the Battle of North Cape. The following year, that name became associated with the engagement in which HMS Duke of York and British destroyers sank Scharnhorst. The earlier convoy fight is now known as the Battle of the Barents Sea. This distinction prevents the two Arctic actions from being confused and explains why older descriptions may use a different name.
