The Battle of the Barents Sea as a leadership test

Clear German orders imposed incompatible demands: destroy the convoy while keeping the attacking ships safe from damage.

Notes

The Battle of the Barents Sea contrasts British and German leadership at several levels. German commanders received clearly defined instructions, but those instructions made the offensive mission impracticable. They had to destroy enemy shipping without exposing their own valuable ships to meaningful risk. Clear orders therefore offered little help unless subordinates could obey them and still achieve the objective.
