What HMS Hood’s turrets cost in displacement

HMS Hood’s enclosed turrets show the weight penalty of giving heavy guns protection comparable to Repulse’s barbettes.

Notes

Most Royal Sovereigns used open barbettes, while HMS Hood received heavily protected enclosed turrets. Repulse displaced 14,380 tons and Hood 15,020 tons at normal load, with much of the increase attributed to the turret structures and mechanisms. The comparison turns gun protection into a visible naval-architecture tradeoff rather than a simple claim that a turret was automatically better. Hood's distinctive cylindrical installations connect the added armour and machinery with the displacement paid for them.
