Sweden could not simply copy the maritime strategy of an island power because the Baltic could freeze and overland threats still existed. The Scandiship24 visit to Suomenlinna, also known historically as Sveaborg, and the Finnish submarine Vesikko broadens that point. The island complex was a secure fortress base where a fleet could shelter during winter or withdraw for repair when facing superior forces. Its dry dock was intended to be enclosed by walls and roofing so ships could be maintained in difficult weather and better protected while immobile. Vesikko adds a technological connection as part of the experimentation said to have fed into Germany's later U-boat programme. Basing, winter maintenance, and protected repair capacity mattered as much to Baltic sea power as the ships themselves.

Baltic winter and fortress basing
The Baltic's ice and exposed approaches made fortified winter bases, protected repair facilities, and submarine experimentation essential parts of regional naval strategy.
