After the presidential defeat at Concón, Balmaceda widened repression by arresting people suspected of sympathy with the congressional cause. He then ordered the execution of young cadets in military training on suspicion of sedition. Many came from influential families connected to Chile's armed forces, so the act threatened officers whose own sons or peers were exposed. Coercion meant to secure the regime instead accelerated the loss of military and social support. The final presidential position at Placilla therefore weakened for political as well as battlefield reasons.
