Balancing a pre-dreadnought refit

An extensive refit weighs heavier guns, armor, speed, ammunition, and stability against a strict displacement limit.

Notes

The refit rearranges weapons, adopts 13-inch guns, adjusts protection, and reduces speed in a repeated search for weight savings. Ammunition, torpedo equipment, bulkheads, propellant, and armor all compete within the original hull's displacement limit. Each attempt to improve firepower or survivability also changes fore-and-aft balance and the space available for secondary weapons. Modernizing an existing hull is therefore a system-level compromise, with stability, endurance, firing arcs, and protection competing for the same limited weight.
