Bainbridge coordinated air defense over Bosnia and the Adriatic

Sharp Guard boardings and Red Crown duty during Deny Flight show Bainbridge combining sanctions enforcement with theater-wide air-warfare coordination.

Notes

During Operation Sharp Guard, Bainbridge conducted roughly one hundred merchant-vessel boardings to enforce sanctions against the former Yugoslavia. She also supported Operation Deny Flight as Red Crown, coordinating the air-warfare environment over Bosnia. Her sensor suite provided almost complete radar coverage over Bosnia and the Adriatic, while her SM-2ER system could engage more than sixteen aircraft or cruise missiles simultaneously at ranges beyond seventy-five nautical miles. That capacity shows why maximum missile range is only one measure of an air-defense system. The number of targets a ship can track, the missiles it can launch and guide together, and the time required to reach distant targets determine its actual defensive value.
