Hein served as vice admiral under Jacob Willekens in a fleet of 26 ships sent against Salvador in Bahia, the capital of Portuguese Brazil. He personally led the storming of the city's sea fortress. The defenses collapsed quickly, and looting followed the capture. Portuguese unpreparedness is attributed to the expectation that attacks would fall on Spain. Spain subsequently helped reconquer territory for Portugal, limiting the durability of the expedition's gains.
