Bacchante's gunfire support at Gallipoli

Bacchante repeatedly manoeuvred for effective fire at Gallipoli, suppressed Ottoman artillery, and supported the Anzac battles before later convoy service.

Notes

After the loss of three sisters, Bacchante and Euryalus escorted shipping between England and Gibraltar and then moved to Egypt. Bacchante arrived too late for the Ottoman raid on the Suez Canal but soon joined the Gallipoli campaign. She manoeuvred bow-on toward the shore and repeatedly adjusted position to improve her fire against Ottoman guns. At Anzac Cove she joined three pre-dreadnoughts in suppressing Turkish artillery during the major attack of 19 May, then later bombarded troops around Lone Pine and Chunuk Bair. Captain Algernon Boyle was ashore commanding the Anzac evacuation even though Bacchante herself was absent. The cruiser remained in the Mediterranean, collided with the armoured cruiser Achilles in 1917, and finished the war as flagship of the Ninth Cruiser Squadron at Sierra Leone. Her career shows the continuing value of endurance and heavy gunfire in amphibious support and convoy work.
