How many babies were born during naval battles?
Short answerA non-exhaustive research estimate is roughly one hundred around battles from about 1650 to 1850, with likely undercounting of girls.
NotesClarke's non-exhaustive search, undertaken while helping a colleague with naval social history, found accounts claiming roughly one hundred births during or around battles between about 1650 and 1850. That estimate includes births immediately before or after an action. The records mainly concern boys who could later seek medals for having been present. Girls could therefore be missing from the count, and the total should be treated as approximate.
