Axis forces built teeth without logistical depth

Germany, Italy, and Japan fielded dangerous combat forces but lacked the industrial, transport, repair, and replacement depth of the opposing coalition.

Notes

Axis forces were hollow because investment repeatedly favoured visible combat power over the infrastructure needed to sustain it. Germany used conquest to compensate for poor logistics and internal transport, although its economy did not require an endless series of invasions merely to keep functioning. Italy entered the war during an incomplete rebuilding cycle, and Allied submarines progressively hollowed out Japan's maritime system. Britain, its Dominions, and the United States could replace ships, expand yards, and produce escorts on a different scale. Tactical quality and impressive specifications could not remove the coalition-level imbalance in transport, repair, production, and replacement.
