Why Italy worried the Royal Navy more than Germany

World War II memory often overstates Germany's surface fleet and understates Italy's greater readiness and strength in the Mediterranean.

Notes

Austria-Hungary's neglected professionalism has a parallel in memories of Axis sea power during World War II. Germany dominates popular attention, and its submarines created the dangerous Battle of the Atlantic, but its surface navy lacked a coherent wartime plan. Italy entered combat in 1940 with a more powerful and arguably better-prepared fleet. That made the Regia Marina a more immediate concern for the Royal Navy even though later cultural memory often reverses the emphasis.
