Why Raeder begins the Axis naval chiefs series

The series begins with the professional heads of Axis navies and asks how their decisions shaped the services they led.

Notes

The series focuses on the professional officers who headed naval services and how their decisions shaped their fleets. Axis chiefs come first because their World War II leadership receives relatively little attention in English-language naval history. The planned scope later extends to other navies and periods, including senior leaders in the Napoleonic era. Erich Raeder opens the sequence because the episodes follow order of appointment.
