Averof's regional strength and conservative design

Georgios Averof was probably the Aegean's most capable warship, yet her mixed-battery armored-cruiser design was already conservative in the post-Dreadnought world.

Notes

Georgios Averof was probably the most capable all-round warship in the region, with useful speed, armour and a mixed battery of 9.2-inch and 7.5-inch guns. She was laid down in 1907, two years after HMS Dreadnought, and retained the Pisa-class armoured-cruiser design. Italian industry could have produced a more advanced ship by then. Averof's strength against local opponents therefore coexisted with the limitations of a conservative design.
