The Avenger is almost entirely a broadside platform, with large banks of light macro weapons on both sides. Its maximum firing range is roughly the distance at which the ship itself becomes identifiable, so it must close before delivering its weight of fire. Nothing in that battery covers the bow or stern. The design can be fearsome in a close crossing engagement, but an opponent outside the side arcs can exploit a remarkably specialised and inflexible weapons layout.
