The attraction and limits of automatic 14-inch guns

A speculative British automatic 14-inch mounting shows why rate of fire, shell weight, and turret volume had to align.

Notes

Related papers suggest a British automatic 14-inch concept, though no document proves that a completed design existed. The machinery might have guaranteed roughly three rounds per minute from each gun, giving nine weapons an unusually heavy flow of shells. A triple mounting could still require the beam and internal volume of a conventional quadruple turret because the loading machinery needed so much space. Scaling the same arrangement to 15- or 16-inch ammunition made the moving weight harder to manage, which helps explain the continuing attraction of 14-inch guns in the speculation.
