Why politics can weaken industrial mobilization

Political purges and competing agencies would make an authoritarian America less capable of coherent rearmament, despite the common assumption that dictatorships are efficient.

Notes

Technical competence and political reliability do not necessarily coexist in military institutions. The Kriegsmarine provides an example: its small inherited officer cadre limited political selection at senior levels, unlike larger expanding organizations. Deliberate rivalry between departments can protect a dictatorship while making military and industrial coordination harder. The counterfactual consequence is an America less able to reproduce the unified wartime production effort associated with the historical Roosevelt administration.
