Austria-Hungary's Adriatic strategic trap

Austria-Hungary faced a larger Italian naval-industrial base, an awkward alliance system, and few good strategic alternatives in the Adriatic.

Notes

Austria-Hungary's scout-cruiser program grew out of a difficult position against Italy. Italy could devote greater resources and industrial capacity to Mediterranean war while also accounting for France. Austria-Hungary had fewer resources, and its alliance with Italy rested on deep mutual suspicion. Germany remained the only practical ally because France was tied to Russia and the Ottoman Empire offered little support. The navy therefore had to solve a demanding regional problem without a favorable diplomatic or economic foundation.
