Austro-Hungarian engineering drew on foreign machinery designs

Austro-Hungarian yards and gunmakers could build capable destroyers, while the Tatra machinery still drew on foreign designs.

Notes

Skoda and other specialist firms gave Austria-Hungary a capable naval engineering base. China's torpedo-craft order illustrates the reputation of its shipbuilders, even though the vessel ultimately served Austria-Hungary. The Tatras used Curtis-pattern turbines built by Daimler-Benz with six Yarrow boilers. The boiler choice reflected difficulty finding a German or Austro-Hungarian design efficient enough to get the best out of the turbines. Capable domestic ship construction therefore still drew on foreign machinery designs.
