Austria-Hungary's armoured-cruiser mismatch

Three unrelated Austro-Hungarian cruisers offered little strategic return in seas with few routes for independent raiding or escape.

Notes

The Austro-Hungarian list consists of Kaiserin und Königin Maria Theresia, Kaiser Karl VI, and Sankt Georg rather than a coherent class programme. A navy confined first by the Adriatic and then by the wider Mediterranean had little reason to pay for ships whose defining advantage was the ability to run. Their likely operating area offered neither an easy route to commerce-raiding grounds nor much room to evade stronger forces. Additional Radetzky-class pre-dreadnoughts or other locally useful warships would have provided better value.
