Chapter ยท 47:06-52:02

Austria wins at sea but Italy gains Venetia

Lissa leaves Austria dominant against Italy at sea, yet Prussia's wider victory and Garibaldi's land campaign help Italy emerge with Venetia.

Notes

Italy loses two ironclads and returns with other ships badly damaged, while the Austrian navy has upheld its side of the war even as Austria struggles against Prussia. Garibaldi's Hunters of the Alps then win at Bezzecca, where loyalty and cohesion matter more than the limited staff work behind the attack. The final settlement gives Italy Venetia, separating Lissa's clear tactical result from the war's political outcome. Winning a fleet action does not by itself determine the settlement of a coalition war.
