HMAS Arunta provides a Commonwealth variation on the original British design. Built in Australia after the war began, she combined convoy escort, shore bombardment, and support to the United States Seventh Fleet, and received credit for sinking the Japanese submarine Ro-33. Her six 4.7-inch guns and twin 4-inch high-angle mounting addressed the air-defence weakness found in the British ships. Later modernization, Korean War service, and assignment to the Far East Strategic Reserve show how the Tribal hull remained useful as Australian priorities shifted toward anti-submarine and Cold War tasks.
