Australia holds a large and often overlooked share of surviving naval material. Its collections include Crimean War machinery, museum ships, and, in some cases, the last one or two surviving examples of a type. Filming these objects in place can bring material unfamiliar even to specialist historians before a wider audience. Preservation is geographically dispersed, so studying a navy's past often requires looking beyond the country that built or operated an artifact. Small museums and local collections can therefore supply evidence unavailable in better-known national institutions.
