Alex Clarke planned to visit HMCS Haida and HMAS Vampire before writing the corresponding Canadian and Australian sections of his book. Direct examination of their archives and material would give those sections a basis beyond other authors' accounts. British and Australian naval history were closely connected for much of the period under study, so Australian collections matter beyond a national story. Australia also preserves Crimean War engines that no longer survive in Britain, France, or Crimea. Some museum holdings remained unfamiliar even to naval historians who regularly spoke with Australian colleagues. Wider knowledge of the collections could help researchers find material outside the museums they already knew.
