Mogami versus MEKO for Australia's light frigate

In the December 2024 comparison, Mogami is favored for Pacific operations, while Australia's MEKO experience makes either design defensible and missile capacity remains a concern.

Question

Should the Royal Australian Navy choose the Mogami class or MEKO 200?

Short answer

Mogami is the stronger Pacific-oriented choice, although the requirement itself asks a light frigate to do too much.

Notes

Australia's experience with MEKO-derived ships makes that design a familiar option, and both candidates receive qualified support. The Egyptian MEKO example is described as having a range of 7,200 nautical miles at 16 knots and an official top speed of 28 knots. Mogami's advantages include an ongoing construction program with a Pacific partner, speed above 30 knots, combined diesel and gas-turbine propulsion, Mark 41 launchers, and minelaying equipment. Those features make Mogami the preferred choice in this December 2024 discussion. The unresolved concern is whether a light frigate can provide the missile capacity and range of roles Australia wants.
