Chapter · 2:40-5:08

Australia's strategy as a capable middle-power ally

Australia seeks a broad but scaled force that can defend national interests and make it a preferred contributor to allied task groups.

Notes

Australia's middle-power strategy seeks to make it a preferred ally when British or American carrier groups operate in Southeast Asia. Nuclear submarines, high-capability escorts, additional escort numbers and amphibious forces would give it useful contributions across several missions. A middle power can concentrate on specialist capabilities, but its force then depends more heavily on another country's wider structure. Providing a scaled version of a major power's navy preserves more independent options while costing more than a narrow specialism. Most middle powers settle somewhere between those choices because they need their own defence capability but cannot afford strength in every field.
