AUKUS submarine commonality stops short of identical boats

AUKUS is expected to produce nationally distinct submarine fits, and even a twenty-person crew difference matters to a small navy.

Question

Are the Royal Navy and Australia expected to use the same AUKUS submarine?

Short answer

They may share a design family, but national systems and crewing practices are likely to produce distinct British, American, and Australian variants.

Notes

Shared program language does not mean Britain, Australia, and the United States will operate identical submarines. British boats are expected to retain British systems, American boats American systems, and Australian boats a hybrid that may combine U.S. weapons and fire control with British-style reactor management. The Australian approach is also expected to use fewer people than an American boat. A saving of about twenty sailors per submarine multiplies across crews, relief personnel, and instructors, so several hundred posts can determine whether a small navy can sustain the force.
