Chapter ยท 9:11-11:56

Augustus replaces battle fleets with regional forces

Augustus organizes regional fleets around coastal security, river access, logistics, amphibious movement, and support to land forces.

Notes

The new imperial fleet system placed forces in Britain, Germany, the Danube provinces, Alexandria, Italy, and North Africa. Named examples include the Classis Britannica, Germanica, Alexandrina, Moesica, and Pannonica, within a system that eventually reached about ten regional fleets. Without a peer fleet to fight, smaller vessels suited these waters better than the great Republican polyremes. Their work joined maritime policing and logistics to the army's provincial and frontier operations, making the fleet an everyday instrument of imperial government rather than only a battle force.
