Augustus Agar's career continued well beyond the 1919 coastal-motor-boat action that earned his Victoria Cross. During the Second World War he helped carry British gold to Halifax and survived the sinking of HMS Dorsetshire. Being dragged down with the ship caused an air embolism, and the resulting injuries ended his further service at sea. He then supervised completion of HMS Unicorn and later commanded the Royal Naval College at Greenwich. His wartime officer trainees encountered a captain whose record combined daring small-craft action with survival and continued service after serious injury.
