Devonport Naval Base in Auckland and its Calliope Dock became another long-lived element of the imperial support network. Its origins belong to the 1840s, when both the British Empire and the shore requirements of steam-powered ships were expanding. Sailing vessels could sometimes improvise repairs, while steamships demanded more specialized dockyard equipment and services. Auckland therefore illustrates how technological change and colonial public investment reinforced each other.
