Postwar planning strengthened independence arguments

The charter added force to independence campaigns and encouraged Allied discussion of the world after victory.

Notes

The charter encouraged governments to consider the shape of the world after victory. In this interpretation, that turn toward postwar planning was its greatest consequence. Wider Allied involvement helped prepare international arrangements that eventually included the United Nations. Independence campaigns gained further arguments to invoke, while the United States gained grounds for pressing Britain and other imperial powers to move faster. Those campaigns and pressures were already present, so the charter strengthened an existing process.
