Why the US Navy built few Atlanta-class cruisers

Atlanta-class ships offered formidable 5-inch AA fire, but their armament put them in direct competition with mass-produced destroyers for roles and resources.

Notes

Only a few Atlantas were available early, and Atlanta and Juneau were both lost during the Guadalcanal campaign. Later units arrived slowly even though their batteries would have been useful around carrier forces and a projected invasion of Japan. After those losses, only San Diego and San Juan were available until Oakland commissioned in July 1943, so the type never shaped Pacific screens in mass. The central procurement problem was that several destroyers could provide similar 5-inch gun capacity and broader fleet numbers for the resources invested in a cruiser, leaving Atlanta too close to a very large destroyer to win sustained priority.
