Why Athos matters despite the dating problem

The opening places Athos near Mount Athos and Lemnos, explains the June/July dating uncertainty, and argues that the battle had a larger impact than its size suggests.

Notes

Books and websites date the battle to either 19-22 June or 1-2 July 1807, leaving a basic chronology unresolved. The action took place between Mount Athos and Lemnos and is also known as Monte Santo or Lemnos. It belongs to the opening phase of the Russo-Turkish War of 1806-1812, within the wider Napoleonic conflict. A painting made 46 years later shows that the battle retained commemorative importance, though it cannot serve as an eyewitness depiction. The action's consequences make it more important than its small scale might suggest.
