Athabaskan, Haida, and Channel destroyer fighting

The Canadian Tribal section follows HMCS Athabaskan into 10th Destroyer Flotilla operations and her loss beside Haida off France.

Notes

HMCS Athabaskan's Arctic and English Channel honours open the Canadian Tribals' wartime record. Her story also shows why British archive coverage alone cannot capture the Canadian and Australian ships. During an action off France, Athabaskan was torpedoed while patrolling with Haida, which rescued survivors before German minesweepers took others prisoner. Disputed accounts of a second hit or magazine explosions preserve some uncertainty around the loss.
