Experimental work began during World War II, but dependable service introduction came much later, around the 1960s. Wartime research did not mean that fleets already possessed a mature, routinely deployable anti-submarine torpedo. The postwar budget contraction slowed the transition from promising experiments to operational weapons. A laboratory or test program is not proof of contemporary fleet capability.
