Chapter · 30:18-33:29

Anti-submarine warfare begins with information

See how satellites, open sources, spies, signals traffic, and submarines outside enemy ports build the picture needed for a hunt.

Notes

Modern anti-submarine warfare starts before a sensor operator hears a contact. Public photographs of ships passing the Bosphorus can reveal Black Sea and Mediterranean deployments, while satellites, intercepted communications, human intelligence, and friendly boats near hostile bases add other parts of the picture. World War II traffic analysis likewise helped convoys estimate wolf-pack locations and strength even before codebreaking supplied message content. Cracked codes can turn that inference into much firmer intelligence, although commanders must still allow for deliberate deception.
