Boats from the British brig-sloops Contest and Mohawk attacked the small American gunboat Asp while she was moored in a creek off the Chesapeake. Eleven Americans and eight British were killed or wounded in the fighting before the British captured her and set her on fire. Nine surviving Americans escaped ashore, then returned under Midshipman McClintock after the attackers withdrew. They extinguished the fire, and Roosevelt describes them as restoring the vessel to fighting order. That last claim is questioned because the extent of the fire damage makes her practical ability to fight uncertain.
