Liverpool and the Asama Maru incident

HMS Liverpool's China Station service introduces the risky seizure of German passengers from the Japanese liner Asama Maru near Tokyo Bay.

Notes

Liverpool's Far Eastern deployment led to one of the early war's sharper maritime incidents. German merchant seamen were traveling home to join the war effort aboard the Japanese liner Asama Maru. The Royal Navy removed them just outside visual range of Tokyo Bay, demonstrating how a cruiser on the China Station could enforce British wartime policy far from Europe. The operation succeeded with impunity, but its location near Tokyo Bay made it audacious and diplomatically risky.
