Chapter · 27:37-28:15

Asama's three-war service ends in gunnery training

Asama fought in the Russo-Japanese War, remained useful through the First World War and interwar years, and became a gunnery training ship in 1942.

Notes

Asama fought at Chemulpo Bay, the Yellow Sea, and Tsushima during the Russo-Japanese War. She continued serving through the First World War and the interwar period. In 1942 the old armored cruiser was reclassified as a gunnery training ship. Later disarmament left her with only antiaircraft weapons, but the hull still performed a wartime function. Her survival across three wars demonstrates the durability and adaptability that Elswick's balanced design had promised.
