Asahi displaced about 15,400 tons at normal load and used twenty-five Belleville boilers with two triple-expansion engines for 18 knots. Her 773-person complement operated four twelve-inch guns, fourteen six-inch quick-firers, a dense collection of twelve-pounders and Hotchkiss weapons, and four submerged eighteen-inch torpedo tubes. The smaller weapons show how seriously the design treated torpedo-boat defense as a threat to the battle line. Harvey armor concentrated the thickest protection around the belt, citadel, barbettes, magazines, and conning tower rather than covering the hull uniformly.
