Arniston shows the voyage rhythm of East Indiamen

Arniston's dated voyages show long absences, short turnarounds, repeated China trading, and a final government charter for troop transport.

Notes

Arniston's first listed voyage ran from April 1795 to March 1797, followed by another departure on 5 June 1797 and a return on 23 October 1798. These voyages kept her away for roughly sixteen months to almost two years. Her routes included St. Helena, Madras, Bencoolen, Bombay, and China. Time back in Britain probably included local trading, repair, and refit, although that activity is inferred rather than established by the voyage dates alone. On her ninth voyage, she was chartered by the British government to transport troops toward the Cape and India, and that voyage ended in her loss. Repeated voyages illustrate why owners needed ships carrying cargo at sea instead of sitting idle in port.
