Press coverage and a royal visit sell the Elswick formula

See how Armstrong amplified Esmeralda's reputation through planted press coverage and a visit by the future Edward VII.

Notes

Armstrong's publicity campaign extended beyond his own dramatic statements about Esmeralda. An anonymous article in The Times was written by Armstrong Mitchell's chief naval architect, lending apparent outside weight to the ship's reputation. The Prince of Wales, the future Edward VII, was also invited to inspect the cruiser. The campaign succeeded and helped make Armstrong's company a fortune.
