Could armoured cruisers protect Mediterranean convoys?

Armoured cruisers could deter ordinary surface raiders, but the Mediterranean offered few such targets and exposed them to ships they could not safely fight.

Question

Could armoured cruisers serve effectively as convoy escorts in the Mediterranean?

Short answer

Yes against ordinary raiders, but the theatre produced few suitable targets, and major threats such as Goeben required heavier ships.

Notes

Convoy escort was one of the class's more credible jobs because an armoured cruiser could overpower many raiders. The theatre's blockades and chokepoints, however, made hostile surface raiders comparatively scarce. Breslau might be fought at the cost of heavy damage on both sides, while Goeben was too powerful for an armoured cruiser to engage sensibly. Pre-dreadnoughts offered a stronger deterrent because they could at least threaten enough damage to make Goeben's success strategically costly.
