An armed Parliament creates the Ordainers

Fear of Gaveston brought armed earls to Parliament, where Lancaster displaced the Scottish agenda with a constitutional attack on Edward II's household government.

Notes

The earls arrived armed and claimed that Gaveston was concealed in the king's chamber, forcing Warenne, Gloucester, and Richmond to police London and guarantee safe conduct. A meeting intended to address Robert Bruce instead became Lancaster's indictment of royal finance, evil counsel, Magna Carta violations, and failure in Scotland. Edward II yielded to the election of twenty-one Ordainers empowered to reform the kingdom and royal household for a year. The membership balanced reformers with royal sympathizers, while Warenne was one of only three earls omitted. Parliamentary reform emerged from a security crisis as well as from constitutional principle.
