Armed merchant cruisers as a wartime force multiplier

Although poorly suited to fight capital ships, armed merchant cruisers helped keep convoys escorted and patrol commitments covered across a global war.

Notes

Rawalpindi and her sisters filled patrol and escort roles that would otherwise have absorbed scarce regular warships. Without them, some convoys would have gone unescorted and the Northern Patrol could not have maintained the same coverage. Their contribution made it easier for the Royal Navy to sustain global commitments and retain deterrent positions in places such as the Far East for longer while allocating its most capable ships elsewhere. Their value lay in force multiplication and coverage, even though a converted merchant vessel could not replace a cruiser or battleship.
