As chief of staff, Armando Diaz stopped the Austro-Hungarian offensive on the Piave and led later Italian victories on the Piave and at Vittorio Veneto. The victory at Vittorio Veneto ended the war on the Italian front. His postwar standing extended to the Liberty Memorial ceremony in Kansas City and commemoration in New Orleans. A senate seat, ennoblement as Duke of Victory, service as war minister, and elevation to marshal reinforced that reputation inside Italy. These honours distinguish Diaz from Luigi Cadorna and explain why his name carried broad popular value.
