Chapter · 35:03-38:32

Arkansas fights through to Vicksburg

Arkansas reaches Vicksburg badly battered, then survives Farragut's nighttime passage under continued mortar and artillery fire.

Notes

Arkansas reached Vicksburg because much of the Union force was not positioned to engage her, but the passage inflicted severe damage and at least thirty casualties. Spectators saw the human cost inside the ironclad while the crew spent a day tending the dead and wounded, recoaling, and making temporary repairs under mortar and shore fire. Farragut later ran past the Vicksburg batteries at night, yet the rust-coloured Arkansas blended into the dark riverbank and escaped effective fire. A Union shot destroyed her sick bay, damaged machinery, and caused six more casualties, leaving little margin despite the celebrated arrival. A shot attributed to Arkansas disabled Winona's engines, although her effect on the rest of Farragut's fleet remains uncertain.
